Finse
By train the trip from Bergen takes about 2,5 hours and 4,5 hours from Oslo. The tiny society of Finse is located on the biggest Northern European mountain-plateau and between two of Norways National Parks. Finse evolved as a society in relation to the construction-work at Bergensbanen in the early 19th century. Since then people have repeatedly struggled to leave this charming place.
At the most Finse had about 200 inhabitants. Today the place only has 10 residents. However, during high-season there are almost 35 people living and working at Finse.
Tourism is the biggest industry, but Finse is also an important place for research of unspoilt natural landscape. As the winter-season lasts from october - june the place is know as a winter-paradise. Many expeditions choose to test equipment and train at Finse. Due to the untouched natural environment Finse is a very popular winter-destination. It is however in the summer that we welcome the highest number of tourists. This is because of the very popular biking-route called Rallarvegen (translated to The Old Navvy Road). the biking route has been awarded "Norways most beautiful biking route", between 22-25000 people bike the route every year. The glacier is also ever increasing in number of visitors.
